The works on this page represent a selection of drawings and paintings from my past.
I felt my body heavy, and noticed a chair calling me. Not any chair, but a particular chair that had to be positioned right for my body to settle. I began to wonder if the chair called me first and my body felt tired? Or was it the other way around? A part of me needed holding and support in that moment in time. In a universe that is self-aware, I wondered how I may have somehow completed something for that chair? We have such intimate relationships with chairs. These drawings are about the dreaming space of that relationship. In our consensus reality we would call these works semi-abstract. Yet in a dream, space and time bend. In these works I've made use of multiple vanishing points to re-create a dream-like space. It's an invitation of you to enter.
These large drawings form half of an exhibition that I had with the sculptor Helen Printer. We challenged each other to respond to each others work. Helen responded to my works through a 3D sculptural expression and I continued the conversation by drawing my felt response to her work. Our conversation was a non verbal challenge to each other.
This series of watercolours arose through working deeply with my childhood dream. In Process Work and Jungian psychology, dreams are made up different energies that are in a dynamic relationship. The 'you' in a dream has one kind of energy, whereas a table or a monster has a different kind of energy. An entire dream is made up of some parts that you identify with and other parts that are marginalised. Yet the entire dream is a map of your wholeness in the moment. Jung considered the very first dream you remember or the earliest memory you have to represent a fundamental pattern running through your life. In 2015 I completed an MA dissertation exploring the energies within my Childhood dream and how they underlie my painting process. I had this dream when I was 3 years old, and at the age of 5 I knew I wanted to be an artist. I used art-based research to explore this connection. The works on this page have resulted from this research.
My thesis is available for download on my PUBLICATIONS page.
Each painting gave rise to an accompanying poem. You can watch the paintings and poems together in a video production on my VIDEO page.
