While outdoors, I am drawn to paint different light conditions and atmospheres that catch my attention. The Fleurieu Peninsula is my studio. I’m our there painting each week, studying the light, colour and air. I take a photo or two for reference, then return to my studio to deepen my experience.
A revelation happens in my studio. Imagination, light, land and paint wrestle together as I discover how a painting wants to be organised. This may take weeks or even months as my memory, body perception and dreams seek out the way on canvas. Painting is a full bodied experience for me. I paint to connect to place through my body.
Nature is full of detail. Through considering patterns of light and colour relationships, I build my paintings up using shapes. Shapes within shapes that are close in tone. Shapes of colour are simply placed next to each so that they create an envelope of light. I aim to create a little packet of light and air on canvas. As I play with these colour relationships, I’m always asking myself ‘what is trying to be shown here? How can I say it simply?
The works are a representation of works from my studio as well as some plein air studies. They are available for purchase. Please contact me if you are interested.
